The poetry of wanting

Serena Miller grew up surrounded by affection so overwhelming that it became the foundation of her personality. As the only child of Alistair Miller and Cassandra Song, she was adored from the moment she was born. Every uncle spoiled her, every aunt indulged her whims, and every cousin learned quickly that Serena rarely heard the word “no.”Beautiful, lively, and impossible to ignore, Serena developed the confidence of someone who had always been loved openly and generously. She floated through life with effortless charm, never taking things too seriously and preferring laughter over responsibility whenever possible. To the rest of the family, Serena was exhausting in the most lovable way. To Serena, life was simply meant to be enjoyed. She spent most of her childhood between ballet studios, luxurious family gatherings, and experimenting in the kitchen. Ballet became her longest-lasting passion, while cooking was one of the few things she genuinely focused on. She adored hosting small dinners, trying extravagant recipes, and romanticizing domestic life in a way that made everyone both amused and concerned.

From a young age, Serena became fascinated with the idea of love and marriage. While other girls dreamed of careers or independence, Serena dreamt of engagement rings, elegant family names, and being adored by a husband who treated her like royalty. The family initially dismissed it as childish fantasy, especially when she declared at thirteen that her “life calling” was to become a young bride.
Unfortunately for everyone involved, Serena never grew out of it.
Her favorite person to bother about the topic was her uncle Don. Unlike most people, Don never dismissed her outright, even when her ideas sounded ridiculous. He had a soft spot for Serena that everyone in the family noticed, though it manifested more through quiet indulgence than blind encouragement.Don never fully fed her fantasies either.
Whenever Serena became too swept up in romantic ideals, he was usually the one reminding her that marriage was more complicated than pretty dresses and family prestige. He rarely lectured her harshly, yet he refused to romanticize adulthood for her completely. Serena hated when he became logical because it disrupted the fairy tale she preferred living in.

Everything escalated when Serena discovered that Don himself had entered an arranged marriage to a woman Serena considered impossibly elegant and beautiful. In Serena’s mind, this confirmed every romantic fantasy she had ever built around high society marriages. To her, it wasn’t a political arrangement or a complicated adult responsibility. It was proof that fairy tales could exist within their world. From that moment onward, Serena became determined to have her own arranged marriage.Much to Alistair’s horror, Serena began treating the matter like a personal mission. She begged her father to “find her a proper husband,” made lists of desirable traits in future candidates, and turned every formal family gathering into an opportunity to “accidentally” meet eligible young men. She approached the subject with such sincerity and enthusiasm that it became difficult for the family to tell whether she was joking anymore.
